Rawan Hazim

Age: 3 years
Diagnosis: Tetralogy of Fallot
Place of origin: Iraq
Story:

Rawan is 3 years old girl who was diagnosed with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) after birth. This is a complex cardiac condition that could not be treated in Iraq due to lack of expertise and resources.

The Assyrian Medical Society and Mr. Rob Raylman of Gift of Life International had accepted a generous donation through Mr. Gokyar Karsit from a group of Rotary Clubs in Istanbul, which had organized a cardiac mission for Iraqi children to be treated at Baskent University Hospitals in Istanbul, Turkey. Rawan was the fifth patient to arrive into Istanbul in June 2009.

Under care of Professor Kursad Tokel, Professor Riza Turkoz, and Dr. Canan Ayabakan of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, Rawan underwent appropriate work up followed by a successful open heart surgery.

The Assyrian Medical Society would like to express its deepest gratitude to Dr. Ahmad Kasim, Pediatric Cardiologist, Basrah Iraq; Mr. Rob Raylman; Professor Kursad Tokel, Professor Riza Turkoz and Dr. Canan Ayabakan; Gift of Life staff, RC of Istanbul Karakoy – Mr. Gokyar Karsit, Mr. Fatih Saracoglu; Mrs. Renk Sencan from RC of Istanbul Tesvikiye; RC of Istanbul Nisantasi; RC of Istanbul Beylikduzu; RC of Istanbul Kadikoy; and RC of Istanbul Erenkoy.
